How to become a SEA
There are three steps to becoming a SEA:
- Complete a SEA Registration Form online here.
- Attend a SEA induction session
- On receiving your registration form our SEAs Manager will inform you of the date of the next SEA induction in your area.
- Complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check
- As being a SEA involves working with children we are obliged by law to ask you to complete a CRB police check. We need to see you in person with various forms of ID for this, so it is usually easiest to do the CRB check during the SEA induction.
The induction session covers, among other things:
- Background information about the scheme and what you can do as an ambassador
- The current education system, recent changes and top tips for working in schools
- Guidance about good communication skills - how to put your message across to different audiences

Please be aware that to complete a CRB form you will also need to know your National Insurance number and your home addresses covering the last 5 years.
Quotes from current SEAs
“I had a great day today and am still buzzing from it.” A. Baxter, Oxford University
“The Maths at work day at Henry Box was a well organised busy day. I think the students got a wide view of the use of maths at work in various jobs. I learnt a lot about presentation skills.” E. McCarron, STFC
“It looks good on your CV, and it is so much fun, and it helps you keep your feet on the ground. As a scientist it is very easy to just be inward looking and focussed on your experiments, and its great when you have a day out of the lab that is spent with children who are enthusiastic about meeting a real-life scientist!” K. Broome, Oxford University
“Just to let you know that I have now done two Y10 presentations, and loved every moment of it. It was very satisfying to see groups of bored looking teenagers ‘transformed’ into enthusiastic potential-engineers! Your comments about how to pitch my presentation to this age group, were very useful.” R. Symington, WSP Group
