Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI)

SBRI is designed to help Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) gain greater access to publicly funded Research and Development (R&D) contracts. It does not give grants but it does provide an alert service about government procurement opportunities via the Supply2.gov.uk website. From 1 May until 31 July 2008, the http://www.supply2.gov.uk website will allow new registrants to gain free access to public sector contracts valued under £100,000 for the UK and Northern Ireland. Part of the Department for Business' Enterprise Strategy, released in March, which aims to increase the amount of government business that is won by small firms.

The SBRI participating Government Departments will aim to buy at least 2.5% of their R&D requirements from SMEs. The Department for Innovation Universities & Skills (DIUS) is responsible for co-ordinating SBRI.
