Helping to bridge the gap between fundamental research and commercial application, Technology Transfer supports both academic researchers and companies by funding applied research or development projects to a stage where they are attractive to a follow-on funder. | ||

| Technology Transfer is currently inviting preliminary applications for two of its awards:
· Translation Awards: open to researchers from both academic institutions and early-stage companies; projects covering any aspect of technology development from a range of disciplines - including physical, computational and life sciences - will be considered. Projects must address an unmet need in healthcare or in applied medical research, offer a potential new solution, and have a realistic expectation that the innovation will be developed further by the market. Funding areas include: diagnostics, enabling technology, regenerative medicine, therapeutics, vaccine and medical devices. Deadline for preliminary applications: 17 November 2008 · Seeding Drug Discovery: this five-year, £91 million initiative aims to develop early-stage small-molecule drug discovery that will be the springboard for further research and development by the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry in areas of unmet medical need. Deadline for preliminary applications: 7 November 2008 Technology Transfer has already committed over £100 million to translational projects across 50 institutions and in excess of 30 companies. The Wellcome Trust is the largest charity in the UK.
