Cybersense Biosystems Ltd was founded in 2001 as a spin-out company from the University of Surrey.

| Full Profile: | ||
| The company manufactures and distributes test systems to detect pollution in environmental samples such as soil or groundwater. Its core patented technology, ROTAS (Rapid On-site Toxicity Audit System) uses naturally occurring bioluminescent bacteria to rapidly detect levels of toxicity. The sales, distribution and manufacturing departments are based at Milton Park in Abingdon with grant funded research carried out as collaborations with universities across the UK and Europe.
The availability of appropriate and timely funding has been essential for the organisation. Initial investment from the University of Surrey's Seed Fund and a SMART award from the DTI enabled the design and manufacture of a prototype. In 2002, the company raised a substantial amount of capital through Oxfordshire Investment Opportunity Network (OION), a technology business angel network, to continue development of ROTAS and to begin field trials. In December 2002, the company secured a DTI BIO-WISE Demonstrator award to work with several large companies in the contaminated land industry, allowing Cybersense to complete development, field-test and evaluate ROTAS in preparation for product launch. Since 2002, two further rounds of investment has been raised, both of which have been over-subscribed. In addition to private investment the company has raised over £1 million of public research funding. The company are currently not looking for funding but are keen to make contracts and develop collaborations to continue the expansion of sales in the UK, Sweden, Italy, Japan, South Africa and Australia and expand further into the rest of Europe, Asia and the US. |
