Angiogene Pharmaceiticals Ltd is a privately held drug discovery company based in the United Kingdom. Our Research and Development efforts are focused on identifying novel agents to treat cancer and other diseases dependant upon active angiogenesis.
Full Profile:
Angiogene is a drug discovery company targeting diseases involving active angiogenesis. The company was originally formed in 1993 to exploit the expertise and intellectual property of the founding scientist, Dr. Graeme J. Dougherty, in the areas of gene therapy and vascular biology. Angiogene established its U.K. Office in 1996 and was registered in Scotland in 1997 as Angiogene Pharmaceuticals Ltd. The company's research is presently carried out at laboratories in the U.K. and in North America. In 1998 Angiogene secured its first major partnership with a large pharmaceutical company, licensing ANG453 to AstraZeneca. Renamed ZD6126, this compound is now in Phase I. In July 2002, MediciNova Inc. acquired exclusive worldwide rights to Angiogene's second generation vascular targeting agents (the ANG600 series). MediciNova has assumed responsibility for the future preclinical and clinical development, regulatory activities and commercialization of the ANG600 series and expects to initiate a Phase I clinical program in 2003.

As a drug discovery company Angiogene develops compounds to the preclinical stage when they are licensed to major pharmaceutical companies for further development. This approach shares risk, provides funding for our early-stage research projects, accesses the development expertise and resource of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies and may eventually lead to promotion of the drug by an effective global salesforce.

Angiogene is a 'virtual' company. Research is carried out on a contract basis at centres of excellence in the appropriate discipline or therapeutic area. All intellectual property rights from these contracts vest in Angiogene. By keeping the company virtual we retain flexibility, we access the skills and experience of leading centres worldwide and we focus more of our cash resources on the core research necessary for the generation of innovative products, minimising overheads and administrative costs.

Angiogene is a privately-held company. Initial financing was leveraged by undertaking contract research in a non-core area and the finances so obtained were applied to a very focused research effort resulting in the discovery of ANG453. This compound was licensed to AstraZeneca in a deal involving upfront, milestone and royalty payments. The cash inflow from this and subsequent deals is being applied, again in a very focused manner, to accelerate our other programs in the area of selective vascular damage.
