The Oxfordshire Investment Opportunity Network (OION) was established in 1995 as one of the UK's first business angel networks. Today, it ranks among the most successful in Europe. OION links investors to companies with high growth potential who are seeking business development funds from £50,000 to £1m.
Full Profile:
How OION operates

1. Monthly Investment Meetings

Companies present their business proposals to investors at OION's monthly investment meetings. They also include networking opportunities, enabling the parties to meet on an informal basis. Meeting Programmes are sent to investors in advance of each meeting.

2. Selection by OION

OION carefully selects businesses for presentation to our investors.

Key criteria include:

High growth potential
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
Proof of principle
Access to a growing market
Entrepreneurial flair

3. Presentation Panel

Before the investment meeting, companies have an opportunity to test their business proposals on our Panel of investors, including a business angel, a representative from Seed Capital Ltd (a venture capital fund provider), plus professionals from HSBC Bank and Grant Thornton. They have specialist experience in dealing with early stage technology businesses and provide practical advice to improve the presentations.

4. Post Meeting Summaries

After the investment meeting, a summary guide of the companies is sent to investors, with an option to request more detailed information. OION will also arrange follow up meetings with companies where appropriate.

For investors, the Network offers access to a rich source of selected investment opportunities in early stage ventures in Oxfordshire and the South East.

Our investor membership is largely composed of private individuals, together with some Venture Capitalists and Venture Capital Trusts. The typical private investor, or 'Business Angel', is a successful entrepreneur seeking to reinvest capital. Business Angels often bring management experience and contacts, as well as capital, to boost the development of early stage businesses.

Some Business Angels may already have a portfolio of investments in unquoted companies. OION can help first time investors make contact with experienced members. After an investment has been made, some Business Angels look for a 'hands off' role while others seek involvement in the business, through a non-executive directorship or other role.

OION screens business proposals to ensure that they match our investor requirements.

Key criteria include:

High growth potential
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
Proof of principle
Access to a growing market
Entrepreneurial flair

OION also helps companies to ensure that their business proposals reach an 'investment-ready' state by offering advice on business plans and access to our Presentation Panel of investors, including a business angel and a representative from Seed Capital Ltd (a venture capital fund provider), plus professionals from HSBC Bank and Grant Thornton. The Panel provides practical advice to improve the proposals before they are presented at the Network's monthly investment meetings.
