The Nuffield Science Bursary Scheme is an initiative set up by The Nuffield Foundation (www.nuffieldfoundation.org), a charity with a long-standing interest in science, mathematics and technology education. Its aim is to give students who are interested in science a chance to work alongside practising scientists by contributing to science or technology based projects in the areas of research and development.
The scheme enables first year Advanced GNVQ/GSVQ and 'A' Level students to carry out a 4-6 week project during the summer holidays in an area of science or technology that interests them. Students receive an educational grant of £80 a week while working on the project and gain valuable insight into the way science is carried out and what is involved in research.
Organisations acting as project providers have the opportunity to spread knowledge about their activities, develop staff skills and demonstrate their commitment to education while having a young person carry out science project work which is useful to them.
The Nuffield Science Bursary Scheme is run by 18 Nuffield Regional Co-ordinators. The Oxford Trust is the Regional Co-ordinator for the scheme in Oxfordshire. Since 1998 The Oxford Trust has awarded 145 bursaries to Year 12 students in Oxfordshire - both for projects set up by The Oxford Trust and for projects set up by individual schools/students.
