Workshops for Primary Schools
Discovery South East is a new programme of Science and Technology Days being rolled out through the South East of England. The programme below is being offered to primary schools in Milton Keynes, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire by The Oxford Trust.
The Science and Technology days focus on ‘Scientific Enquiry’, enabling children to explore and understand concepts in an exciting way. Activities are based on national curriculum criteria and SATs, and tailored to individual school needs.
One day events involve up to 60 year 5/6 pupils and can include up to two practical workshops. Ideal as a Revision Activity.
Two day events allow every pupil in the school (KS1 and KS2) to participate in a problem-solving challenge. Ideal as part of a school’s science week.
For a sample timetable for two day events please download a copy here.
Thanks to generous support from Lloyd’s Register we are offering these themed activity days at significantly reduced rates, making them excellent value
Prices:
- 1 Day Event (60 pupils, any year group) :Total cost £100 + VAT
- 2 Day Event (All KS1 & 2) :Total cost £500 + VAT OR £2 per child + VAT, whichever is cheaper.
Below are some of the activities that can be included in The Oxford Trust’s Science & Technology Days. We will tailor each day of activities to your school’s requirements (subject to staff availability and kit limitations). Unless stated, these workshops are suitable for 30 pupils at any one time.
Electricity & “Circuit Detectives” (Year 4-6, up to 60 pupils, 90-150 minutes)
Become a Circuit Detective - identify faults to repair electrical circuits. This activity works well in conjunction with Control Technology.
Data Logging with LogITs™ (Years 5-6, up to 30 pupils, 180 minutes)
Log temperature, sound & light levels around your school. Display data on your computer as graphs for analysis. Schools will need to load software onto their computers before hand for this workshop.
Control Technology (KS2, up to 30 pupils, 150 minutes)
Programme a barrier using Lego Dacta™ and use traffic lights and light sensors to control cars as they enter a car park.
Paper Plate Monsters (KS1, up to 30 pupils, 30-40 minutes)
After a short discussion about the air around them, pupils make and decorate a paper plate monster whose mouth opens as a result of inflating a balloon.
Egg Drop Challenge (KS2, up to 70 pupils, 90 minutes)
In this activity exploring the forces of gravity and air resistance, pupils work in teams to see if they can use a range of materials to protect an egg dropped from a height of at least 3m.
Materials (KS1, up to 30 pupils, 45-60 minutes)
Sort materials according to their properties and discover which ones break! Does paper make a good saucepan? Would you want a wooden scarf? Find out in our workshop for KS1. This activity ends with everyone making their own slime.
Tower Building (Year 4-6, up to 70 pupils, 90-120 minutes)
What makes structures strong and stable? Use your skills in a challenge to design & build towers from rolled paper tubes
K’Nex workshops (KS2, up to 50-70 pupils (depending on project), 90-120 minutes)
We offer a number of workshops that use the popular construction toy K’nex. Projects include:
- Fairground Engineering
- Cranes
- Crazy Cars
- Rubber Band Cars
Water Rockets (KS1 & KS2, up to 60 pupils, 90-150 minutesd)
Pupils design, decorate and safely launch a lemonade bottle water rocket. School/pupils need to provide bottles and a large outdoor space for launching (rockets can shoot 30m into the air!).
Marble Mazes (YR 2-6, up to 50 students, 45-60 minutes)
Make a route for a marble to travel down as slowly as possible without stopping. This session involves lots of experimenting and accurate timing.
Torches (YR 4-6, up to 35 pupils, 45-60 minutes)
Pupils work in pairs to make a torch from a variety of materials. It sounds easy, but there’s no wires and no crocodile clips! This session develops problem-solving skills and increases understanding of circuits.
“Everyone benefited from the valuable contribution the Engineers made to our Science Days. Worth every penny!” Andrea Huxley, Headteacher.
